Orthotic & Prosthetic treatment for Adult
Rehabilitation covers a very large range of services. Frequently
our involvement starts in the very early days following a major
trauma or disease process. When a person has suffered a loss of
limb or function due to accident or disease, adult rehabilitation
extends well beyond the early days of treatment and into rehab
and outpatient
settings.
SCOPe practitioners are routinely called in
for consultation at rehabilitation hospitals, where we function
as integral members of the rehab team. We work closely with patients,
families, doctors, and therapists, developing and implementing
treatment plans for a variety of complicated diagnoses.
- spinal fractures
- spinal cord injury
- amputations
- strokes
- brain injury
- neuromuscular diseases
Oftentimes, a SCOPe practitioner's
involvement with adult rehabilitation begins in the operating room
or intensive care unit. In these instances, we perform a range
of treatment depending on the injury or disease. For example, a
practitioner working with a new amputee may apply specialized dressings
(called immediate post-operative rigid dressing), and in appropriate
circumstances, the rigid dressing can be equipped at the same time
with foot & pylon (or for upper extremity amputation, a terminal
device) to allow for early prosthetic training.
In the treatment of spinal cord injury with
loss of function and paralysis, we design and fit leg braces that
let our patient stand and walk to their maximum potential. These
braces include short leg braces (AFO's), long leg braces
(KAFO's), and extend to the reciprocating gait orthoses (RGO's).
When people have suffered strokes or brain injury,
we often developing custom bracing to stabilize feet, ankles, and
knees, again with the goal of maximizing ability to stand and walk
to the best of their ability in the long-term (functional ambulation).
In the early treatment of spinal fractures,
SCOPe practitioners are usually involved with fitting special braces
used for immobilization, such as the halo or body jacket. Other
areas of involvement for adult rehabilitation involve maintaining
levels of independence for people diagnosed with disease processes
such as Charcot-Marie Tooth, Multiple Sclerosis, or Diabetes. We
assess individuals for their own specific needs, and then develop
and provide the brace that best suits their needs. |
