If you are the right person for a myoelectric upper
extremity prosthesis, your SCOPe practitioner can work with you
to demonstrate what's possible
almost instantaneously. Every patient can be evaluated; current
technology lets us simulate a myoelectric fitting in a matter of
minutes, so
you can experience it for yourself.
Externally powered prostheses
have many advantages over more conventional prostheses. Patients
who receive a myoelectric prosthesis have
a substantially greater grip force than patients using a cable-operated
system. Whether the prosthesis is a hook or a hand, no harness
is necessary to suspend the prosthesis, and it can be controlled
anywhere
you can reach (i.e. above your head or behind your back).
The
best part of myoelectric control is that you can use the same
basic muscles that controlled the wrist and fingers to control
the opening and closing of the prosthetic hand and or wrist.
You can
also vary the speed and force of operation. Best of all, most
patients can be taught the control activity in less then five
minutes.
We have treated patients whose myoelectric upper extremity
prostheses have allowed them to regain abilities they never
imagined. One
patient returned to his profession as an auto mechanic. Another
woman's dream
was to continue being an independent, full-time, stay-at-home
mom who cared for her children and family. Her myoelectric
prosthesis made that possible.
It is incredibly inspiring
to see a person picking up an object for the first time following
an amputation. In those
moments,
when we
see our patients' faces, we see a world of possibility
revealing itself for the very first time. |
