Guidelines For Wearing And Caring For Your New Foot Orthoses
General Information
Your foot orthoses were custom designed to conform
to the shape of your feet and to help correct the alignment of your
feet and legs.
Proper alignment is important for balancing and distributing your
body weight more evenly, thereby reducing excessive pressure and
stress on your feet, ankles, knees, and other body parts.
In most
situations, foot orthoses are able to correct mild to moderate
foot problems and reduce associated pain. Because each person is
unique, so is his or her response to treatment. As you adjust to
this new and proper alignment, you may experience some discomfort.
The adjustment period usually ranges from 1-6 weeks when the recommended
wearing guidelines are followed. Wearing Guidelines
Wear Time
Start slowly, only wearing your orthoses for one hour on the first
day, with low to moderate activities. Increase time each day by
1-2 hours until you are comfortable wearing your device all day
or during peak activities such as work, sports, etc. The greatest
long-term benefits are achieved when you are consistent about wearing
your orthoses on a daily basis.
Pain
If you experience any pain or discomfort, remove the orthoses from
your shoes for at least 2-4 hours, then try again. If pain persist,
take them out again and make an appointment to see your orthotist
for an adjustment.
Skin Care
Be sure to wear stockings or socks to minimize the possibility of
skin irritation. Check your feet carefully every day for any reddened
or tender areas, which could indicate a problem with the fit of your
shoes or the orthoses.
Shoes
Select good shoes with proper support and always try them on with
the orthoses in place to ensure proper fit. The best type of shoes
to wear with your orthoses should have a closed back and toe; come
up over the top of the feet like laced-up sport shoes; low heels;
a removable sock liner; and a slightly wider width to accommodate
the orthoses.
Durability
A wide variety of materials are used to enhance durability and
provide the necessary comfort and support for your activity level.
With most
of the materials used today, your orthoses should last more than
one year with moderate use and proper care.
However, if the material
on the bottom of your orthoses gets worn down, or if your devices
break, call your practitioner immediately.
Do not attempt to fix the orthoses yourself. Care
Only
plastic orthoses can be washed with soap and lukewarm water.
Avoid repeated soaking and allow your orthoses
to dry for 24
hours before using again. Never use cleaning products or water
on leather,
cork, or other porous materials.
Occasionally, the orthoses
may squeak in your shoes. This can be eliminated by lightly dusting
baby powder into your shoes.
Remember...
If you have any questions about your treatment or the type
of foot orthoses that are recommended, please talk to your
SCOPe
practitioner
at your first appointment so they can work with you and your
doctor to choose the best approach.
