Ankle/Foot Orthosis
AFOs or Ankle Foot Orthoses are made for a wide variety of reasons. They can be custom fabricated to the specific individual or can be patient ready and designed to fit a range of individuals. An AFO extends from the knee or just below the knee to the foot. They are used to address specific musculoskeletal conditions and assist weak muscles, support injured areas or protect against deformities.
Our staff will provide a thorough evaluation of your individual needs and working with your Physician, develop a treatment plan to maximize your outcome. A determination will be made as to the best way to proceed with your AFO and you may be measured, casted or scanned for the device. There are a variety of materials that braces can be made from and can vary from laminated carbon fiber to polypropylene. The decision regarding the materials used is determined by how rigid or flexible your AFO needs to be.
Proper footwear and socks are crucial to the success of most AFOs and your SCOPe Orthotist will assist you in determining the most compatible shoes and socks. Furthermore you will be assisted in a wearing schedule and precautions associated with the use of your AFO. Use and care information will be provided and you will be scheduled for the appropriate follow-up appointments.
