Vacuum Assisted Suspension
A vacuum system provides superior fit between the liner and the socket while minimizing residual limb volume changes throughout the day.
This is achieved by using a pump and exhaust valve. The system is activated at each step when using a pump or a sensor. It regulates the required negative pressure within a defined range. The system controls the volume of the residual limb and simultaneously improves blood circulation. This type of system increases safety in everyday life.
Vacuum technology is intended to:
- Minimize limb movement in the socket
- Maintain a balanced volume in an amputee’s residual limb
- Facilitate perspiration evaporation within the socket
- Reduce friction between the limb, liner, and socket
An example of a Vacuum Assisted Socket System that SCOPe Orthotics and Prosthetics, Inc. uses is the Harmony Socket Enhancement System by Otto Bock.
